Painting Demo:
Painting Rubens' Lions

Every Wednesday from April 22 to June 17, 2026, I'll be painting a master study of Peter Paul Rubens' lions from his 1614 "Daniel in the Lions' Den" at the National Gallery. But this is a master study with a difference: I'll also be incorporating a human figure from Manet's Impressionist-era painting "The Old Musician." I'll be happy to discuss this blend of styles with visitors, so be sure to stop by. Disclaimer: As a copyist I am not endorsed by the NGA, but am there for individual learning and to expose others to works in the NGA collection.

This is an "unfinished" shot of my first in a series of three planned Rubens/Manet mashups. The other two will feature other human figures from Manet's "Old Musician."

Solo Show:
Learning from Masters, Learning from Life

Stay tuned for details about my first solo show, a two-room exhibition about two paths of learning: copying master painters at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. and painting portraits from live models at home. The show documents how I synthesized these two different practices into a series of original paintings searching out echos of tradition in our diverse, contemporary lives.

Art Travels:
The Rome Workshops

This summer I'll be returning to the Rome Workshops for an intensive, two-week session of six-hour days with live models. Contemporary realist painter and Lyme Academy instructor Hollis Dunlap will crack the whip on a small group of us, bringing portrait and figure painting to a new level.
